Oprah’s 60 Minutes Round Table highlights America’s Hope

A group of Michigan voters, who have taken on the name “America’s Hope,” are proving that Americans are greater than the politicians who represent them. 60 Minutes Special Contributor Oprah Winfrey and Republican Pollster Frank Luntz first gathered the 14 Michigan voters over the summer — half Trump voters, half Clinton voters.

Amazingly, the group of 14 have stayed in touch and developed friendships despite their political divides. They talk daily in a Facebook message thread, where the President’s tweets and the gridlock in Washington are constant topics of debates.

In her first report for 60 Minutes, Oprah Winfrey explores the political divide in the U.S.

The first report played this past September: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/post-election-is-the-u-s-still-a-nation-divided-oprah-winfrey-reports/

Oprah Winfrey leads another discussion with 14 Michigan voters

The group was reassembled in the New Year and the second report aired in February: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/oprah-follows-up-with-the-partisan-voters-in-michigan/

The group still disagrees on most issues — and no one has changed their mind. But their continued communication shows that with a little extra engagement, the average American citizen can be more bipartisan than our elected politicians.

If this experiment could be repeated across America — that is — if strangers with different political believes engaged daily with their neighbors, I think that our communities would be stronger for it. You can see in the second report how the group is able to act cohesively despite their differences; even getting together for social outings. For example, they are able to take on really complex topics such as the #MeToo movement, in part because they have developed respect for one another and will actually hear each other out.

One thing they all agreed on — their options are not well reflected in Washington:

Jeff: You know, I think if we really get down to it, those of us that are on the right side of the equation, we’re not always, what, we don’t always want to be defined by Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan. And the folks on the left, they don’t always want to be necessarily defined by Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi.

Jennifer: Not at all.

Jeff: Because there are positions that those groups hold that aren’t real congruent with what a lot of us think sometime.

Tom: Agreed. One hundred percent.

Lauren: That’s right.

Jeff: And you know, maybe that’s our fault for letting the parties go the way they have and the platforms that have been created. But ultimately it’s gonna be up to us if we want to fix it or not.

That is one major thing that Oprah’s experiment on 60 Minutes has revealed clearly — our two party system is a failure! It would be interesting to have these 14 people split up into new political parties and see how many they naturally form.

We know one insecure American who was watching Oprah’s reports:

I wonder what the America’s Hope group had to say about that tweet! Read more here: http://time.com/5165601/trump-oprah-60-minutes-politics/

Disney Donates $1 Million to Youth STEM Program in Celebration of ‘Black Panther’

The Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) thanks you for your repeat viewings of Marvel’s Black Panther — The Walt Disney Company, which owns Marvel Studios, has announced that it will be donating $1 Million to expand Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s youth STEM programs, “supporting the high-tech skills that were a major theme in the plot of Black Panther and are essential in helping youth succeed.”

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, and is highlighted by the Department of Education as having an inadequate number of  few American students pursuing expertise in STEM fields and ultimately a limited pipeline of teachers skilled in these subjects. By helping to expand STEM programs in underserved communities across the United States with a piece of Black Panther’s box office success, Disney has beautifully paralleled a lesson from the film.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America will use this one-time grant to further develop its existing national STEM curriculum, and establish new STEM Centers of Innovation in 12 communities across the country. The curriculum and new centers will serve and inspire kids and teens, with an emphasis in the following communities: Atlanta, GA; Baltimore, MD; Chicago, IL; Harlem, NY; Hartford, CT; Memphis, TN; New Orleans, LA; Oakland, CA; Orlando, FL; Philadelphia, PA; Washington, DC; Watts, CA.

A new STEM Center of Innovation in Oakland… Sounds familiar!

The son of Bernie Sanders is running for Congress in New Hampshire — #VoteLeviSanders

Do you live in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District & wish that Senator Bernie Sanders represented you in Congress? Well, you might be getting the second best thing. Bernie’s son, Levi Sanders, has announced that he is running for the open House seat in New Hampshire. In 2018, the new #FeelTheBern is #VoteLeviSanders.

Never heard of Levi? He served as his father’s Senior Policy Strategist during his 2016 Democratic Presidential Primary Campaign. Why don’t we let Levi’s Official Campaign Statement serve as your introduction to the New Hampshire candidate:

“After much thought and consultation with my family, friends, and the people of New Hampshire, I am excited to announce today that I am running for Congress in New Hampshire’s 1st District. This is a unique opportunity to listen to the hard working men and women of New Hampshire about the issues that matter to them.

“The majority of voters in New Hampshire, and around this country, agree that we need a Medicare For All healthcare system which guarantees healthcare to every man, women, and child without out of pocket expenses. We need an educational system which says that whether you are rich or poor, you have the ability to go to a public college and/or university tuition free. We need to demand that we have a minimum wage which allows people to work forty hours a week without being in poverty. It is urgent that we address the opioid problem which is at a crisis level in New Hampshire. We must demand that women finally earn the same pay as men. It is unacceptable that we haven’t found the political courage to pass sensible gun legislation. That time is up – we must be bold and unwavering in our fight for the people.

“For 15 years, New Hampshire has been my family’s home. For over 17 years, I have represented the working class who have been beaten up by the system. It is time to demand that we have a system which represents the 99% and not the 1% who have never had it so good.

“This campaign is about each and everyone of us, who strive each and everyday, to make this great state and country a better place in which to live.”
